CHAPTER 3 - The First Lunch

Y/N walked beside Taehyung, Jungkook, and Jimin toward the university cafeteria.

She still found it strange how quickly her morning had changed.

A few hours ago, she had been standing outside the university gates wondering whether she would make any friends.

Now she was walking with three boys she had met less than an hour ago.

Jungkook was talking about something that had happened during their first week at university, while Jimin kept interrupting him to correct his version of the story.

Taehyung walked beside Y/N, occasionally glancing at her whenever Jungkook and Jimin started arguing.

Y/N smiled.

She hadn't expected to feel this comfortable so quickly.

Jungkook suddenly looked at her.

Jungkook: "Y/N, you're awfully quiet."

Y/N blinked.

Y/N: "I'm listening."

Jungkook: "That's suspicious."

Y/N frowned.

Y/N: "Why?"

Jungkook pointed at Taehyung.

Jungkook: "Because Taehyung has been talking for five minutes and you haven't complained once."

Taehyung looked offended.

Taehyung: "I wasn't talking that much."

Jimin laughed.

Jimin: "You were."

Taehyung: "You two are supposed to be my friends."

Jungkook: "We are. That's why we're honest."

Y/N laughed.

Taehyung looked at her and smiled.

Taehyung: "See? At least someone appreciates me."

Y/N: "I didn't say that."

Taehyung stared at her.

Y/N tried not to laugh.

Y/N: "I just laughed."

Jungkook burst out laughing.

Jungkook: "She's already learning."

Jimin: "Give her one day."

Y/N: "Learning what?"

Jimin smiled.

Jimin: "How to deal with us."

Y/N shook her head.

Y/N: "I think I made a mistake agreeing to lunch."

Jungkook: "Too late."

They finally reached the cafeteria.

It was crowded with students, and the noise immediately filled the room.

Y/N looked around.

Y/N: "Wow."

Taehyung: "First time here?"

Y/N: "Obviously."

Taehyung: "Right."

Y/N looked at him.

Y/N: "Don't start."

Taehyung laughed.

They found an empty table near the window.

Jimin and Jungkook went to get the food while Taehyung stayed behind with Y/N.

For the first time since meeting him, they were sitting quietly without Jungkook or Jimin filling the silence.

Y/N looked toward the window.

Students were moving across the courtyard outside.

Taehyung noticed her expression.

Taehyung: "Nervous?"

Y/N looked at him.

Y/N: "A little."

Taehyung: "About college?"

Y/N nodded.

Y/N: "Everything feels new."

Taehyung: "You'll get used to it."

Y/N: "What if I don't?"

Taehyung smiled.

Taehyung: "Then we'll help you."

Y/N looked at him for a moment.

Y/N: "We?"

Taehyung: "Me, Jimin, Jungkook."

He paused.

Taehyung: "And your brother would probably blame us if we didn't."

Y/N laughed softly.

Y/N: "That's true."

Taehyung: "So you're safe."

Something about the way he said it made Y/N pause.

Not because it was romantic.

It wasn't.

It was simply comforting.

And Y/N wasn't used to letting people make her feel comfortable so quickly.

She looked down at the table.

Y/N: "Thanks."

Taehyung: "For what?"

Y/N: "For helping me today."

Taehyung smiled.

Taehyung: "You already thanked me."

Y/N: "I know."

Taehyung: "Then you're welcome."

Before Y/N could reply, Jungkook and Jimin returned with the food.

Jungkook placed the trays on the table.

Jungkook: "We brought enough food for everyone."

Jimin sat down.

Jimin: "And Jungkook almost dropped everything."

Jungkook: "I did not."

Jimin: "You almost did."

Jungkook: "Almost doesn't count."

Y/N smiled.

They started eating.

The conversation quickly became chaotic again.

Jungkook talked about clubs.

Jimin talked about professors.

Taehyung complained about an upcoming assignment.

Y/N listened, occasionally joining in.

For the first time that day, she wasn't thinking about whether people liked her.

She wasn't worrying about getting lost.

She wasn't thinking about her promise to herself.

She was simply enjoying lunch with three new friends.

Then her phone buzzed.

Y/N looked at the screen.

Yoongi Oppa.

She answered immediately.

Y/N: "Hello?"

Yoongi: "How's your first day?"

Y/N smiled.

Y/N: "Good."

Yoongi: "Just good?"

Y/N: "Actually... really good."

Yoongi: "Really?"

Y/N: "Yeah."

She glanced at the three boys sitting across from her.

Jungkook was trying to steal food from Jimin's plate.

Jimin was pushing his hand away.

Taehyung was watching them with an amused expression.

Y/N smiled.

Y/N: "I made some friends."

There was a short pause.

Yoongi: "Already?"

Y/N: "Yes."

Yoongi: "Who?"

Y/N hesitated.

Y/N: "Taehyung, Jungkook and Jimin."

Another pause.

Y/N: "Oppa?"

Yoongi: "I'm here."

Y/N: "You know them, right?"

Yoongi: "Yes."

Jungkook suddenly leaned toward her.

Jungkook: "Tell him we're taking good care of you!"

Y/N immediately moved the phone away.

Y/N: "Jungkook!"

Jungkook laughed.

Yoongi had clearly heard him.

Yoongi: "They're with you?"

Y/N: "Yes."

Yoongi: "Good."

Y/N smiled.

Y/N: "I'll call you later."

Yoongi: "Okay. And Y/N?"

Y/N: "Hmm?"

Yoongi: "Enjoy yourself."

Y/N: "I will."

She ended the call.

Jimin looked at her.

Jimin: "Your brother really worries about you."

Y/N: "He always has."

Taehyung smiled.

Taehyung: "That's because you're his little sister."

Y/N: "Unfortunately."

Jungkook laughed.

Jungkook: "I think it's cute."

Y/N: "Don't encourage him."

They continued eating.

None of them noticed the small change in the atmosphere.

None of them knew how important this ordinary lunch would become.

For Y/N, it was simply her first real memory of college.

For Taehyung, it was the first time he had spent time with Yoongi's younger sister outside their brief meeting that morning.

For Jungkook and Jimin, she was simply the new friend they had unexpectedly found.

Everything was still simple.

No complicated feelings.

No confessions.

No jealousy.

Just four people beginning a friendship.

And Y/N still believed her heart was safely protected behind the walls she had built around it.

She had no idea how difficult those walls would become to maintain.

Especially around people who were slowly becoming important to her.
